BIA works by sending a weak alternating current through the body, and measuring the resulting drop in voltage caused by the resistance level of body tissue against the current, known as “Impedance” or “Z”.

Impedance is formed using a combination of two components: ohmic resistance (known as “Resistance” or “R”) of the electrolyte-containing extra- and intracellular fluid, and the capacitive resistance (known as “Reactance” or “Xc”) produced by cell membranes.

What can we learn from Resistance?
5分11选5In general terms, water acts as a conductor, so more body water correlates with decreased Resistance. According to this principle, because muscle contains a significant amount of water, subjects with increased muscle mass will have less Resistance. Conversely, because fat acts as an insulator, more fat correlates with increased Resistance.

What can we learn from Reactance?
5分11选5When the electric current passes through body cells, cell membranes can store the charge and act like capacitors, creating capacitive resistance. Thus, Reactance is used to determine the cell’s ability to store energy, indirectly reflecting cellular integrity and strength.

5分11选5Using clinically validated algorithms, BIA devices can calculate the amount of fat, muscle, body water, and other parameters using Impedance, Reactance, Resistance, and other variables such as height, gender, age, and weight.

The applicability of a BIA device fundamentally depends on the applied mathematical equations and algorithms used to calculate body composition. Development and validation of these equations is a technically complex process, and the validity of the equations ultimately determines the accuracy of the BIA device!

5分11选5Traditional BIA devices estimate body composition using one frequency (50kHz is most commonly used). The frequency of the current affects the resistance of biological conductors. Because low frequencies have difficulty overcoming and passing through cell membranes, they are well-suited for measurement of extracellular water.

High frequency currents can pass through cell membrane walls, making it possible to measure intracellular water.

That’s why Charder’s Body Composition Analyzers use multiple frequencies, using direct measurements to provide more detailed analysis of body composition, particularly relating to body water balance, which is a crucial output parameter when it comes to disease management and rehabilitation.

Segmental measurements

Segmental Measurements

When first invented, BIA treated the body as a single cylinder, using whole-body impedance to calculate output parameters. Generally, this is done by measuring the impedance of two “cylinders” (foot-to-foot or hand-to-hand), using those values to estimate values for the rest of the body. Another method is to attach electrodes to the right foot and right leg, measuring impedance for that half of the body. This may work relatively well for subjects with “standard” body types, but the level of accuracy decreases significantly for other groups.

5分11选5Shape, relative muscularity, and length of the trunk, arms, and legs can vary significantly between people and populations. If a subject with a highly muscular upper body and relatively thin legs uses a foot-to-foot BIA device, it is quite probable that overall muscle estimates will be inaccurate, as the upper body’s impedance is not measured.

To avoid this potential measurement error, and to better measure the torso in particular (which comprises roughly half of total body mass in most people, yet cannot be measured with traditional BIA devices), Charder’s BIA devices use segmental measurements that independently measure impedance for the trunk, right arm, left arm, right leg, and left leg, for more accurate results.

Abdominal Fat Analysis

Obesity has become an increasingly severe health problem in countries all over the world, and many people purchase home use BIA devices to estimate body fat percentage.

However, “body fat” carries different levels of obesity-related health risks depending on where it’s located. Body fat can be divided into subcutaneous (beneath the skin) and intra-abdominal fat. Abdominal fat can be further divided into visceral fat and retroperitoneal fat. Visceral fat specifically is highly correlated with risk of obesity-related disease, and it can occur even if a subject’s weight or BMI is within standards.

Visceral fat is most accurately measured using computed tomography (CT), but CT scans are expensive and impractical for regular use due to the dose of radiation involved. Charder’s Body Composition Analyzers provide estimates of visceral fat, providing a useful and important indicator for regular tracking and control.

BIVA

Bioelectrical Impedance Vector Analysis (BIVA)

In medical settings, quick, accurate, and cost-effective evaluation of a patient’s hydration status is a critical part of diagnostics and treatment. Conventional BIA uses regression equations to produce estimates of Total Body Water, Extra- and Intracellular Water. However, because equations are formulated based on “normal” healthy populations and rely upon assumptions about standard hydration level, accuracy of these estimates may vary based on disparity between the subject and comparison population. This is where Bioelectrical Impedance Vector Analysis (BIVA) comes in.

BIVA assesses fluid status and body cell mass through Resistance (R) and Reactance (Xc). Assuming that resistance correlates with body fluid, and reactance correlates with body cell mass, R and Xc are normalized for height, and compared with the reference population. Because R and Xc – unlike body composition estimates – are directly determined by body fluid volume, BIVA can be used as an accurate assessment tool by subjects with abnormal hydration levels, who might not be able to rely upon conventional BIA results.

5分11选5Most BIA parameters describe quantity in a subject. The amount and proportion of body water. The amount of fat. The amount of muscle mass. However, subjects with the same quantity may still have disparity in quality. A ballet dancer, a person who is naturally lean, and a person with anorexia may all have similar height, BMI, and body fat percentage. But are they equally healthy?

To answer this question, BIA devices need to utilize more advanced technology that typically can’t be found in your bathroom body fat scale.

The first is phase angle.

What is phase angle, and what can we learn from it?

Due to the capacitive properties of cell membranes, when an electric current passes through a cell, a phase shift between current and voltage occurs, causing a time difference that can be measured in degrees by some modern BIA devices, and is referred to as the phase angle.

Phase angle is thus determined by Reactance (Xc), which correlates with cell integrity, and Resistance (R), which correlates with the distribution of fluid within and outside the cell membrane. A high Xc/R ratio will result in a higher phase angle, and a low Xc/R ratio will result in a lower phase angle.

1) How long does measurement take?

The MA601 uses 3 frequencies (5kHz, 50kHz, 250kHz), and will complete measurements within 45 seconds. The MA801 uses 5 frequencies (5kHz, 20kHz, 50kHz, 100kHz, 250kHz), and will complete measurements within 50 seconds.

2) How do I perform a scan?

Remove shoes and socks before scanning, and stand on measurement platform. Place feet on foot electrodes, and grasp handles firmly. Arms should be extended straight and slightly outward. For best results, try to keep still, and avoid speaking during your Charder body composition scan.

3) How often should I scan?

5分11选5Body composition doesn't change significantly day-to-day. While frequency depends on each individual or program's needs, we generally recommend scanning once every 2-3 weeks to track and monitor progress.

4) When is the best time for a scan?

For best results, we following the guidelines below:

  • No vigorous exercise - Measure before exercise, not after! Exercise affects circulation and body water, which will affect measurement accuracy.
  • Use the bathroom - The effect of body waste on electrical conductivity is unknown, and may be interpreted as fat mass.
  • Avoid food and drink 2 hours before measurement - The effect of food and drink (digested and undigested) on electrical conductivity is unknown, and may be interpreted as fat mass.
  • Input data correctly - Charder body composition analyzers utilize input data (Height, Age, Gender) and measurement data (Weight, Impedance) to measure body composition. If input is incorrect, interpretation of results will also be inaccurate.

5) Why are my results different on other BIA devices?

We do not recommend directly comparing scan results between BIA devices manufactured by different brands.

Both the hardware and software of a BIA device can affect the data used by the algorithms for calculations of body composition. In addition, each manufacturer uses its own unique set of algorithms to estimate results, and as such variation between different brands is possible. As such, we recommend using your Charder body composition as a baseline measurement, using it to track changes.

6) Is BIA safe?

5分11选5Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis is an established technology that has been used in the medical and fitness industry for many years. The electric current used for measurement is imperceptible; however, people with implanted electronic medical devices (e.g. pacemakers, artificial lungs) should NOT use BIA.

7) Can anyone perform a BIA scan?

5分11选5BIA scans are not recommended for the following groups:

    • Pregnancy, Nursing Mothers - Body composition algorithms are based on “normal” healthy adults. Because body composition for pregnant women and nursing mothers is relatively inconsistent (particularly body water), results should be used for reference only.
    • Prosthetics, Amputation - Measurement current needs to pass through both hands and feet to operate correctly. If subject has amputated limbs or prosthetics, the scan will not function correctly.
    • Embedded Metal - Measurement utilizes electrical conductivity properties of the human body. Metal conductivity is higher than that of body tissue, and may cause inaccurate measurement results.

That said, it is important to note that even if a subject has implants, that in of itself does not mean BIA cannot be used. Bioelectrical impedance analysis works by measuring electrical impedance as it passes through the patient's body. Body fat and muscle will result in different impedance values, thus making it possible to calculate results based on a combination of weight, impedance, and other input data. Therefore, if objects in the patient's body affect impedance, the end result may be influenced and less accurate. Current information from case studies indicates that metal implants can indeed affect the body composition analysis result.

However, this does not necessarily mean the device should not be used. For example, the MBF series uses a foot-to-foot measurement method. A metal tooth implant will have no effect on the impedance, because the electrical current does not pass through the head, and thus the end result will be the same as normal. The same goes for a patient with a metal implant in her arm.

5分11选5If there is a metal implant in an area of the body where the electrical current passes through, then it may indeed affect impedance. The patient can still use the results, but should be made aware that there may be some inaccuracy, and results should be used primarily for tracking change, rather than a one-time diagnosis. The reason BIA can be used for tracking change even if there is an implant is because the implant's effect on impedance is consistent (unless, of course, it is removed). Thus even if there is an inaccuracy (ex: overestimation of body fat by 2%), it should fairly consistently overestimate by 2%, and so the device is still useful to see if your body composition has changed.

8) Will medication affect my results?

It is possible that some medications may affect your body composition measurement results. Notably, medications that affect body water and blood flow will likely affect overall results.

9) Will menstruation affect my results?

5分11选5Body Composition does not remain consistent throughout the menstrual cycle. As such, scans during your cycle may not be as accurate.
